Conscious Dental Sedation
Sedation for more comfortable experience
Dental Anxiety Concerns
Do you feel extremely nervous when you need to go to the dentist? Are you always avoiding dental appointments because of your fears? Sedation dentistry can help you feel more relaxed before and during the procedure for a more positive experience.
What is Dental Sedation?
Dental sedation involves using medication or sedatives to bring patients to a calmer state of mind during their treatment.
Dental anxiety is a common concern among patients who may find it difficult to get the required dental treatments because of the almost paralysing fear.
Sedation helps by making you feel completely relaxed so you will not worry about the upcoming procedure.
Different Types of Sedation Used in Dentistry
Sedation
Inhalation Sedation – This method is also called the “happy air sedation” because it uses nitrous oxide – also known as the laughing gas, which is administered through a mask placed over the nose. We use this light form of sedation to promote a happy mood and an overall sense of well-being to ease dental anxiety.
IV Sedation – The sedative, in this case, is administered through an intravenous line on the arm or hand. It promotes a calming effect to alleviate nervousness – but allows a constant flow of communication – since consciousness is maintained all throughout the treatment. A dentist comes to the practice to carry out the sedation treatment in a safe and professional manner.
Oral Sedation – In this case, the sedative is in a pill or capsule form and is taken orally prior to the treatment. Depending on the dosage given by the dentist, the oral sedative can make the patient feel lightly drowsy or groggy to the point of almost falling asleep.
General Anaesthesia or Deep Sedation – This is another sedation option that may be used in dentistry to make the patient fully unconscious, often in preparation for extensive oral surgery procedures. In this instance, the patient will be in deep sleep and cannot be easily awakened unless the sedative’s effects have worn off completely.
