Oral surgery refers to the surgical procedures that are done for the treatment of problems involving the teeth, as well as the soft and hard tissues of the mouth. The surgery is done when other non-invasive procedures are not enough to address the dental problem.
Tooth Extraction
Tooth extraction is a simple procedure performed by a dentist that involves removing a visible tooth from its socket. The reasons for a tooth extraction include the following:
- Severe tooth decay where the tooth can no longer be treated or saved
- Extensive infection that a root canal treatment or antibiotics cannot treat
- Teeth overcrowding
- Loose teeth as a result of periodontal disease

Complex tooth extractions involve the removal of a tooth that is below the gum line. In this case, an oral surgeon will need to make an incision on the gum tissue to access the tooth underneath. In some instances, some drilling may be required to be able to successfully remove the tooth from its impacted position. Impacted teeth are often the third molars or “wisdom teeth” – the last molars to come out on the lower and upper jaws – that do not erupt fully from under the gums. From this position, the impacted teeth cannot be cleaned properly so they can cause painful swelling and infection. Oral surgery is necessary to prevent and solve these impacted wisdom teeth problems, so they do not cause more serious issues.
