What is an OPG?
An Orthopantomogram (or OPG) is a type of dental x-ray that takes a panoramic view of the upper and lower jaw. Images are taken from multiple angles to create a wide view that includes the jawbone and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), as well as all the teeth on both jaws – even the teeth that have not yet erupted or surfaced from under the jawbone.
An OPG displays fewer details compared to the individual tooth x-rays but comes up with a more comprehensive view. This is especially beneficial for looking into the areas that are much less visible and/or harder to access, such as the wisdom teeth or children’s teeth and jaw anatomies.
The images are obtained with the X-ray machine’s rotating arm moving around the patient’s head – there is no discomfort involved since the machine will not be placed inside the mouth.
